Our Chuck Berry cover story retraces the late icon's entire career, from his greatest musical triumphs to his darkest personal failures. Berry never wrote overtly about race in his songs, though he sometimes coded the subject cleverly. With 1956’s Brown Eyed Handsome Man, in some of his most outrageous and bold lyrics, he sang about the victorious allure of a black man for white women ( There’s been a whole lot of good women shed a tear/For a brown-eyed handsome man ), and ended the song with a celebration of baseball’s Jackie Robinson – who broke. But Berry wouldn’t accept proscriptions about race and sex. Two months before the Meridian incident, on the night of June 2nd, 1958, he was driving a peach-colored Cadillac in St. Charles, Missouri, with a 17-year-old brunette, Joan Mathis, when he got a flat tire.

The song wasn’t a chart entry for Chuck, but would win notoriety when an up-and-coming group called the Rolling Stones chose to cover it as their first single in 1963, and had a modest success with it, even if none of them much cared for their version. But Chuck’s original is also notable as the final single he released before he lost his liberty for two years from 1962. Featuring some particularly nimble guitar work by Berry himself, the short-but-sweet track, a mere 1’47 long, was released as a single by Chess in October 1961.

The Rolling Stones are more than Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and their rotating cast of bandmates. The Stones are Robert Johnson, they’re Chuck Berry, they’re Muddy Waters. They’re something intangible-a renegade spirit that turns up in nearly a century of music. And just as that outlaw aesthetic has been around for far longer than the band itself, The Rolling Stones will be around for much longer than 50 years
