Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (/ˈmoʊpəˌsɑːnt/; French: ; 5 August 1850 – 6 July 1893) was a 19th century French author, remembered as a master of the short story form, and as a representative of the Naturalist school, who depicted human lives and destinies and social forces in disillusioned and often pessimistic terms. Maupassant was a protégé of Gustave Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements (outcomes)
Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and sportsman. His economical and understated style-which he termed the iceberg theory-had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954
Maj Sjöwall (born September 25, 1935 in Stockholm) is a Swedish author and translator. She is best known for the collaborative work with her partner Per Wahlöö on a series of ten novels about the exploits of Martin Beck, a police detective in Stockholm. They also wrote novels separately
The Swedish husband-and-wife team of Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall were journalists and innovative writers of detective fiction. The authors strongly criticize abuses of power and the systematic use of propaganda in society. Many of these same motifs appear in Wahlöö’s novels of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Wahlöö died on June 22, 1975, in Malmö, Sweden. We hope you and your family enjoy the NEW Britannica Kids. Take a minute to check out all the enhancements! Going into reading this series, I knew Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö were avowed socialists who wrote these books in large parts as a critique of inequality in Sweden. But while their beliefs do sneak out from time-to-time, they generally ground their mysteries in the tradition of a police procedural as opposed to pedagogy cloaked in mystery drag. That goes out the window with Murder at the Savoy, which is about as didactic of a book as I’ve read from them. Hot summer in Sweden, and a not-so-pleasant rich guy is shot in a restaurant. The shooter escapes via an open window.

Someone is assaulting and killing young girls in the parks of Stockholm. With only a brutal mugger and a three year-old boy for witnesses, the investigation is stalling. It's only a tiny detail surfacing in Beck's mind that puts the murder squad on the trail of the killer, but will they get him before he strikes again? Translated by Alan Blair. Dramatised by Katie Hims. Narrator 1 - Lesley Sharp. Narrator 2 - Nicholas Gleaves. Martin Beck - Steven Mackintosh. Lennart Kollberg - Neil Pearson. Gunvald Larsson - Ralph Ineson. Frederik Melander - Adrian Scarborough.
According to the cover of my paperback (on the left) this was the second case for Martin Beck, the Stockholm police detective created by husband and wife authors Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall. Actually, I’m pretty sure it was the third, but no matter, it is a highly exciting novel that conflates two manhunts and takes the Ed McBain procedural style into ever darker and muddier waters.
