Among these, player pianos, airplane propellers, and electric bells stand prominently onstage, moving as machines do, and providing the visual side of the ballet. It was loud and percussive – a medley of noises, much as the Italian Futurists envisioned new music of the 20th century. George Antheil: Ballet Mécanique - And Other Works For Player Pianos, Percussion & Electronics. The Cuban composer Amadeo Roldan is believed to be the first composer to write for percussion ensemble. Composed for 16 player pianos, 2 human played pianos, 3 xylophones, 4 bass drums, gong, 7 bells, siren, and 3 airplane propellers, the piece really was ahead of the technology and never quite worked.

3. Mister 528, for multiple player pianos & electronics. 4. Ritmica N., for 11 percussionists. 5. Ritmica No. 6, for percussion ensemble. Ballet mécanique, for pianola, 2 pianos, 3 airplane propellers, siren & percussion, W. 156b. blue highlight denotes track pick.

L’idiozia pura è la panacea universale. Gli atti ragionevoli non procurano che degli inconvenienti.

Ballet mécanique (Antheil, George).

Ballet Mécanique - George Antheil. Ballet Mécanique is not so much a musical work as a phenomenon. The original scheme was that Antheil’s piece should be performed in conjunction with footage the art-film pioneer Dudley Murphy, another American in Paris, put together in collaboration with Fernand Léger. However, the two components were created independently, and the score turned out to be twice as long as the film, which was shown by itself in 1924. There was also the problem of how to synchronize sixteen player pianos.

Album · 2001 · 8 Songs. 2. Serenade for String Orchestra, No. 1: I. Allegro. 3. 1: II. Andante Molto. 1: III. Vivo.
