The symphony must be considered the major work on the disc even though there are those amongst the collecting fraternity who would describe the Idyll as the most ideal yet recorded. The Schubert belongs to the Viennese tradition familiar to those who know the famous recordings by Krips and the VPO ideally coupled with the Symphony 8, LSO. The complete Schubert symphony recordings by Kertesz and the VPO are also much enjoyed for similar reasons. In this manner was I first introduced to Franz Schubert's greatest orchestral masterpiece - his Symphony No. 9 in C major, nicknamed the "Great" Symphony.
