Profile: Rock band from Raleigh, North Carolina whose sound fuses elements of psychedelic and progressive rock.
The Birds of Avalon are a gutsy indie rock affair with a psychedelic sheen; their sound, rooted in old-school album-oriented rock, favors comparisons to punchiness and the greasy, retro vibe of bands like Wolfmother, the Evangelicals, and the Sword. The band formed in Raleigh, NC, soon after Cherry Valence members Cheetie Kumar and Paul Siler got married and quit their band. The Birds of Avalon's second release, the Outer Upper Inner EP, came out in the spring of 2008. They followed up the next year with their second full-length, Uncanny Valley. In 2011 they released the self-titled Birds of Avalon on Bladen County Records.
Since their inception, Birds Of Avalon have recorded a self titled . toured up and down the east coast, throughout the Midwest and eventually around the entire US earlier this summer. Sharing the stage with luminaries such as Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Fucking Champs, Big Business, Oneida, Mudhoney, Valient Thorr, Destroyer, Federation X and Drunk Horse. Birds Of Avalon debut full length album, BAZAAR BAZAAR, will be released May 22nd. Produced by Mitch Easter (. Let’s Active, Wilco), Greg Elkins and Brian Quast.

Featuring former members of boogie revivalists the Cherry Valence and production and mixing work by avowed Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep fan Mitch Easter, the debut album by Birds of Avalon is an unapologetic throwback to 1970s FM rock. Unlike most similar denim and patchouli devotees, however, Birds of Avalon aren't interested in re-creating one particular sound from the period.
Birds of Avalon is a rock band from Raleigh, North Carolina whose sound fuses elements of psychedelic and progressive rock. The band consists of Cheetie Kumar (guitar), David Mueller (bass), Scott Nurkin (drums), Paul Siler (guitar), Jason Alyward (drums) and Missy Thangs (keys). Uncanny Valley was their final album for Volcom. It was recorded after actually completing another complete album just a couple of months previously. The band decided against releasing that one on Volcom feeling that the more spontaneous Uncanny Valley was a better match for the label. Since then, the sextet released Disappearance (5-song EP) and Goin Under (7" single), both on Third Uncle Records (Honey Radar, Queen of Jeans).
