Ed Cherry (October 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and studio musician. Cherry is perhaps best known for his long association with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he performed from 1978 until shortly before Gillespie's death in 1993. Since that time, he has worked with Paquito D'Rivera, Jon Faddis, John Patton, Hamiet Bluiett, Henry Threadgill, and Paula West. He has recorded a number of albums as a leader. First Take (Groovin' High, 1993). Second Look (Groovin' High, 1994).
In fact, this album was the concept of James Mtume (Mtume wrote four of the five tunes (Baraka, Kamili, Maulana, and Kawaida), with Albert Heath contributing the one (Dunia)), in spreading the teachings of Maulana Karenga's Kawaida philosophy. Albert Heath later admitted that they didn't take Mtume's message too seriously, and he was the only member of the band who genuinely had converted to the Kawaida philosophy. Recorded December 11, 1969 and first released in 1970, the album was later reissued with different titles ("Baraka", "The Jazz Masters") as by Don Cherry or Herbie Hancock (or both).

I first heard Ed Cherrys wonderful playing on the tribute CD to Grant Green conducted by Gregg Green Goodens Corner his was backed backed Larry Goldings and Idris Muhammad and it is no wonder that Gillespie liked hi. .I first heard Ed Cherry on the Small's Jazz Club online stream and loved his playing. I then picked up his CD and digging on that too. He plays Jazz ala Wes and Grant Green and his own soulful sound.
