Robert James Keeshan (June 27, 1927 – January 23, 2004) was an American television producer and actor. He created and played the title role in the children's television program Captain Kangaroo, which ran from 1955 to 1984, the longest-running nationally broadcast children's television program of its day. Keeshan also played the original Clarabell the Clown on the Howdy Doody television program.

Bob Keeshan was what made Captain Kangaroo so memorable so it is hard to imagine what the show would have been like without him! ABC. Biography of Bob Keeshan, best remembered as Captain Kangaroo - who was also the original Clarabell Hornblower on The Howdy Doody Show. Better known to millions of viewers as the original Captain Kangaroo, Long Island native Bob Keeshan first came to national prominence as Clarabell the Clown on the Howdy Doody TV show (1947 – 1952). Bob was born in Long Island, but moved to Forest Hills, NY shortly after his birth. He had a happy childhood, living with his immigrant father, mother, younger sister and two older brothers.
In the original version of Captain Kangaroo, Keeshan endorsed two brands of candy bars. He quit smoking following a severe heart attack. If you want more time in your life, don't watch TV. Just as actors are afraid of child audiences because they're so honest, I would be scared stiff of going before the big folks. Play is the work of children. It's very serious stuff.
