Merman and her co-star Ray Middleton were Broadway veterans of the pre-microphone era, experts at projecting their voices from the footlights to the rear balcony, and their stage styles carried over to the recording. Merman, of course, possessed a clarion voice that was never better represented than in songs like "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" and "I Got the Sun in the Morning," while Middleton's sonorous baritone informed "The Girl That I Marry" and "My Defenses Are Down. All of these efforts were included on a 1973 British studio cast recording featuring Merman, and those versions appeared on the 2000 CD reissue of the original Broadway cast album.

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN is probably Irving Berlin's greatest work; very rarely has it been bettered than in the original cast-album. Love it or hate it (I'm with the former), Ethel Merman's voice is the perfect instrument to bring to life the title role. Her sublime treatments of "I Got Lost in His Arms" and "Moonshine Lullaby" beckon the listener to hit the 'repeat' button, while her Broadway belt is given a workout in "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" and "I'm an Indian, Too"

During the early 1940s, he appeared in the movies Gangs of Chicago, the original Hurricane Smith (playing the title role), and Lady for a Night, which starred Joan Blondell and John Wayne.
