Following an independent release, Detroit's Rhythm Corps made their national debut in 1988 with Common Ground. Their efforts yielded a minor hit in the title track, a midtempo number with moody guitar work and a simple lyrical plea for understanding. It was the best thing on the record. Lead singer Michael Persh possesses an interesting voice, but the lyrics, which mainly consist of banal platitudes about injustice, give him much too little to work with. Musically, the band also tread a fairly ordinary path, complete with martial drumming and jangly guitars.
