Leila - Courtesy Of Choice mp3 album

Courtesy of Choice is the second studio album by electronic music artist Leila, released by XL Recordings in 2000. It features vocal contributions from Roya Arab, Donna Paul, and Luca Santucci.

Leila's second album COURTESY OF CHOICE is a more focused effort than LIKE WEATHER, while losing none of her unique vision. Brave," for instance, starts off with a music box theme before chugging into a string-covered R&B hybrid. What?" while the abstract and funky "Sodastream" (awash in feedback) goes into the equally abstract but more stately "Gush Goog.

Reviews about Leila - Courtesy Of Choice (2):

Leila's second album COURTESY OF CHOICE is a more focused effort than LIKE WEATHER, while losing none of her unique vision. "Brave," for instance, starts off with a music box theme before chugging into a string-covered R&B hybrid. Her music, as a whole, bounces between these two sides: the spare and filtered "Work" leads into the quasi-classical "From Before... What?" while the abstract and funky "Sodastream" (awash in feedback) goes into the equally abstract but more stately "Gush Goog." The blippy and emotive "To Win Her Love" fades into the free-jazz of "Thanks, Mr. Jones." For a complete change of mood, the folksy strumming of "To Tell a Lie" clears the air, and the playful, child-like "Be Clowns" is a funhouse ride that you never want to end. An alluring album, sometimes challenging, but always interesting.

This is a more mature album than Like Weather in many respects, although admittedly the production and vocal style is unchanged. This plays more like a professional artist's album whereas Like Weather sounds more a lo-fi bedroom production. Mind you, Leila loses nothing of the intensity, menace, dirt, melancholy, twisted sentimentality or general weirdness of Like Weather. The vocals compliment the electronica throughout, adding soul and grit to the dark but playful electronica. (And there's a song about a sodasteam! - remember?) There is somewhere in here a very twisted yet hauntingly beautiful message, something to do with retaining the innocence of childhood despite being sucked into the dustbin of (post)modern society, and I think part of the listening enjoyment is never actually finding out what that message actually is.
