Madeleine LEngle was born in New York City in 1918. She wrote her first story at the age of five about a little grul. No, it wasnt science fiction she was a poor speller. She did poorly in most of her classes, she said, because she wrote reams of stories and poems when she should have been doing her schoolwork. When she was twelve she moved to the French Alps with her parents and attended an English boarding school in Switzerland. She returned to the United States when she was fourteen, where she graduated from university with an honours degree in English. Helped by adaptations for television and other media, it has sold over eight million copies worldwide, making Madeleine LEngle, who died in 2007, one of the bestselling and best-loved American childrens authors.

Katy Waldman reads Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time and compares its magic to what is missing from the new movie version, directed by Ava DuVernay. L’Engle has a gift for baiting intellectual hooks, for making life feel irresistibly mysterious. What I remember most about her Wrinkle in Time quintet, which I read as a grade schooler in the early aughts, is the fiercely pleasant torture of forcing my imagination to bend in bizarre ways. To read L’Engle is to enroll your brain in a yoga class four levels too advanced.
