John Martyn - Live mp3 album

Live at Leeds is a live album by John Martyn. He independently released this album himself in an initial run of 10,000 that were numbered and signed, after a disagreement with Island about its commercial viability. The working title was "Ringside Seat"; photos of Martyn and bassist Danny Thompson in a boxing ring were taken for a prospective cover, though never used

1973 was a remarkable year for music, but few had a greater annus mirabilis than folk alchemist JOHN MARTYN who devoted the year to the crafting of two strange masterpieces. On the 40th anniversary of Solid Air, MAT SNOW speaks to friends, fellow travellers and bruised survivors to discover the pain, power, joy and sadness behind a master musician’s quest for freedom. Just off the top of your head, 1973 was a vintage year for the album. And then there’s Solid Air by John Martyn. Released exactly 40 years ago, here was a platter to warm the cockles of the college circuit cognoscenti, a dope-head’s delight which bottled a moment; a moment which then faded with its generation to become a period piece with only the faintest afterlife beyond its particular time and place.

Because Island Records didn't feel it was the right time for a live album, Martyn independently released this record from his home.

John Martyn OBE, born Iain David McGeachy (11 September 1948 – 29 January 2009), was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums. He grew up in Glasgow and attended Shawlands Academy. John Martyn moved to London from Glasgow in the mid 1960s. He made his initial recorded impact in 1967, at the age of 19, with his debut album London Conversation.

John Martyn’s record was so deeply emotional. Both the lyrics and the music sounded so effortless. Like the most natural songwriting session you might have on your own in your bedroom at 3am and have absolutely no intention of ever sharing it with anyone because it’s so close to you. It was almost uncomfortable to listen to because it felt so personal

John Martyn was 18 years old when he recorded the music on this CD, which to me is the most impressive thing about this disc. His guitar technique was already amazing for someone of his age; looking back it isn't surprising that he ended up recording such a solid body of work with talent like that. His voice had not yet developed into the raspy and haunting instrument it would later become, but hints of it are all over this album. This is a CD that I admittedly don't listen to very often

John Martyn was one of the great British singers, songwriters, and guitarists, with a career spanning decades.
