US singer/songwriter and actor born January 21, 1942 in Lubbock, Texas. He was responsible for one of the biggest hits of Elvis Presley "In The Ghetto" (although he wrote that under the name of his son Scott) and "A Little Less Conversation". He was a prolific writer of songs for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Bobby Goldsboro, amongst others. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006.

His early work writing for Elvis Presley produced the hits "Memories", "In the Ghetto", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "A Little Less Conversation". A subsequent solo career in the 1970s produced hits such as "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me". He also starred in his own variety show, a Broadway musical, and various films and TV shows.
