Produced by Danger Mouse. Album After the Disco. After the Disco Lyrics. After your faith has let you down I know you'll want to run around And follow the crowd into the night But after the disco All of the shine just faded away Oh oh oh oh Do what you want, do what you will Don't tell me it's not our time. Cause I'm waiting here much too long and Don't assume that I need your love The chill of night has got you dancing away, and I'm Not the dreamer or the dream you're out there looking fo. .
The first Broken Bells album was an eclectic, low-stakes affair that, at its best, came across as two seasoned musicians taking advantage of a major-label budget (the list of additional contributors dwarfed Port of Morrow's considerable collab-a-palooza). The record dipped in and out of different sounds and styles-wheezing indie-pop, drum-machine percolators, Beach Boys-style funhouse psychedelia. The songs lacked the staying power of the Shins' best work but there was enough sonic variety to make for an intermittently engaging listen
Broken Bells are a collaboration between two guys who sit at very different tables in the music-biz lunchroom. Danger Mouse is a d-L. The idea of these two working together is like an endearing mumblecore actor signing on with a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi director. Like the Shins‘ underrated 2012 album, Port of Morrow, the tellingly titled After the Disco is at once sleek and world-weary, often homing in on that sexy moment of malaise when the Seventies wanted to turn into the Eighties so badly but didn’t quite know how to do it yet. I see the ashes on the ground, I know the world is burning down.
Broken Bells have always given us a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. Mercer offers us the advice we don't want to hear, while Burton creates just enough of a groove to convince the listener to bite the bullet and continue forward. The opening track is the musical incarnation of After The Disco's focus. A driving electronic track opens the album as Mercer lays out the foundation of "Perfect World". Then as he diverts to the brutal but crucial crux, the song breaks down into a gorgeous acoustic masterpiece. Similar genius happens on the sprawling wonder of "The Changing Lights" and spacey, psychedelic "Lazy Medicine", a tried and true Broken Bells wanderer if there ever was one.
After months of new singles, short films, remixes and radio appearances, Broken Bells' After The Disco is finally here. Overall, After The Disco showcases much more adventurous songwriting and production than the duo's self-titled debut. You'll hear varying tempos, intriguingly strange sounds, and a fair amount of ponderous, beard-stroke-worthy lyrics.
