Live on Tour, Vol. (CD - Hudson 001). Two saxophonists in alto man Andy Fusco and tenorist Walt Weiskopf front the group. This stems from an earlier grouping where Smith and his bandmates played music out of the repertoire of Buddy Rich, when saxophonist Steve Marcus teamed with Fusco. Marcus passed on, Weiskopf was asked to sit in his chair, and acoustic/electric pianist Mark Soskin and electric bass guitarist Baron Browne were recruited to round out the ensemble.

Drummer Steve Smith has traced the history of jazz drumming-pretty much most of American music drumming-in his storied career that has seen him drive big bands, small jazz combos, and fiery fusion groups, including tenures with Jean-Luc Ponty and the rock band Journey. Though sometimes-as in the case of jazz-rock fusion-he was thrown into the fray without much experience, he has always been up to the challenge. It also included Baron Browne, Mark Soskin, Andy Fusco. Steve Marcus had died, which is why we moved away from the Buddy Rich music so much. Walt Weiskopf joined us on tenor saxophone. We toured and made a couple of records," Smith said. When Coster retired, "it felt right to bring in Mark Soskin on piano and Andy Fusco on the alto. That gave me the ability to play the music from all three groups in one band. It gave us a lot of options.
Steve Smith and Vital Information is an American jazz fusion group led by drummer Steve Smith. The first line-up of Vital Information - Steve Smith (drums), Tim Landers (bass), and Dave Wilczewski (sax) - met in 1971 during their high school years while playing together in the Bridgewater State College Big Band, a Boston area college band under the direction of Vincent Gannon. By 1977 Smith was touring with Jean-Luc Ponty, Landers with Al Di Meola, and Wilczewski with Freddie Hubbard.

Steve Smith Update Since 1977, the world's most widely read drum magazine: in print, online, and the Modern Drummer app. Where the world's greatest drummer meet. With saxophonist Walt Weiskopf joining the band in his place, Smith feels they’ve now got another strong composer and arranger who is already adding great charts to their repertoire. According to Steve, We could see that we had outgrown our original concept and that a new band was born. With that in mind, we agreed on Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy as a fitting name for the group. Alongside Steve, Mark, and Walt are Andy Fusco on alto and Baron Browne on bass. There are also changes in the Vital Information lineup
