Muddy Waters was an American blues artist widely considered to be one of the most important figures in post–World War II Chicago blues. He popularized several early Delta blues songs, such as "Rollin' and Tumblin'", Walkin' Blues", and "Baby, Please Don't Go", and recorded songs that went on to become blues standards, including "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Mannish Boy", and "Got My Mojo Working".

At Newport 1960 is a live album by Muddy Waters recorded during his performance at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 3, 1960. With his longtime backup band, Muddy Waters plays a mix of his older popular tunes and some newer compositions. Chess Records released the album in the United States on November 15, 1960. In 2001, it issued a remastered version with an additional three tracks recorded in Chicago in June 1960.

The profile of Muddy Waters on the front of this album is a classic bit of color portrait photography. The bluesman seems to be staring up at something, a glazed look of wonder in his eyes. What could it be? Perhaps a vision of all the different "best of" sets and repackagings of his material that would happen in the future. There has never been anything quite like it, before or after, and when one has heard Muddy Waters from this period, one has simply heard the best blues has to offer. This collection was the first "best of" Chess created, obviously mindful that what they had on their hands was nothing less than a tray of gold. The earliest pieces, such as "Louisiana Blues," are just marvelous, the country blues slide guitar augmented just so slightly by string bass, the harmonica of Little Walter, and the barest trace of percussion.

This album contains a dozen of Muddy Waters’ most successful recording efforts, circa 1957! There’s Hoochie Coochie Man, rich in reference to voodoo charms, plus faster mover I Just Want To Make Love To You! And in Louisiana Blues, Rollin’ Stone, and I Can’t Be Satisfied, Muddy’s guitar is especially strong. Also included is Honey Bee, where call-and-response is eloquently in evidence: his guitar responding to his vocal call.

The Best of Muddy Waters collects twelve tracks that the legendary bluesman recorded and released as 78s between 1948 and 1954.
