The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, and is one of the best known violin concertos. The concerto is scored for solo violin, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A and B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, two trumpets in D, timpani and strings. The piece is in three movements: Allegro moderato (D major). Canzonetta: Andante (G minor). Finale: Allegro vivacissimo (D major). There is no break or pause between the second and third movements.

Redlands Symphony proudly presents TCHAIKOVSKY's Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35. Discover little-known secrets and interesting discorse on its history, creation, and performance. Whatever the reasons, his otherwise large catalog contains only one successful piano concerto and a single concerto for violin. The Violin Concerto in D was written in 1878 during the period immediately after Tchaikovsky had fled from his disastrous marriage. To escape, he traveled to France, Italy, and Switzerland, where he met his old friend, the violinist Joseph Kotek. Together, they played Lalo’s Symphony Espagnole, and the experience apparently moved Tchaikovsky to immediately begin work on a concerto.
