Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Bach: Kantaten, BWV 17-19. Teldec Classics 8573812095.

Mixed feelings, because the work in question is the Johann Sebastian Bach St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (a conductor who thinks with his heart, and feels with his mind) on Teldec Classics International (catalogue 8573-81036-2) with the Concentus Musicus Wien (so far, so good, right?) but. with female soloists and standard issue adult chorus of men and women. Berlioz' "Les Troyens" won two awards, for best opera recording and best classical album overall. It's by Sir Colin Davis and the London SO, and was self-produced on the LSO's own label. I rehearsed a 17 yr old last evening who took on the musical challenge with a spirit and dedication that I wish some of my adult singers could muster.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s interpretations of Bach cantatas formed a pillar of an ambitious project launched in the 1970s: the first complete recording on historical instruments of this magnificent canon of works. As early as 1954, Harnoncourt had written of the need to hear and perform as if they had never been interpreted before. Shortly after his death in 2016, Gramophone praised these recordings as vivid explorations of marvellous music. 12. Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Johann Nikolaus Graf de la Fontaine und agt; 6 December 1929 – 5 March 2016) was an Austrian conductor, particularly known for his historically informed performances of music from the Classical era and earlier. Starting out as a classical cellist, he founded his own period instrument ensemble, Concentus Musicus Wien, in the 1950s, and became a pioneer of the Early Music movement.
