Chairs Missing marks a partial retreat from Pink Flag's austere, bare-bones minimalism, although it still takes concentrated listening to dig out some of the melodies. Producer Mike Thorne's synth adds a Brian Eno-esque layer of atmospherics, and Wire itself seems more concerned with the sonic textures it can coax from its instruments; the tempos are slower, the arrangements employ more detail and sound effects, and the band allows itself to stretch out on a few songs. In general, the lyrics are darker than those on Pink Flag, even morbid at times; images of cold, drowning, pain, and suicide haunt the record, and the title itself is a reference to mental instability.

There are some records that changed my life forever, and Chairs Missing is one of them. I first heard this record when it came to this country as a . import over thirty years ago, and it is still as fantastic to me now as it was then. It certainly pointed me in a different direction and showed me the possibilities of what a band could be and do. From the moment I heard it, I was off down a new road, and I've never looked back. Sadly underrated, do yourself a favor and get this incredible album by an amazing band that was truly decades ahead of its time

Reviews about Wire - Chairs Missing (8):
My copy of this pressing sounds great, no warp and very little surface noise. The label reads Side Two instead of reading Side One and vice versa. Going to keep it and treat it as a quirk.

My copy of this repress has the sides reversed: "Side one" starts with 'Mercy,' other "Side one" starts with 'Practice Makes Perfect' Irregular pressing I suppose. Sounds great though.
Very welcome pressing. I suppose there is a tiny bit of surface noise here and there b ut I can live with that because most vinyl comes with a little bit here and there. Not as bad as others have described here. Classic record all the way.
I'm enjoying this pressing. Don't have the original so can't compare dynamics. I cleaned mine on an Audio Desk Pro and am not hearing the surface noise others are complaining about, so I'd suggest a deep cleaning of the record before playing. I do have the misprint for side 2; both sides are listed as "side 1" but the track listings are at least correct.
Save your money and don't bother, absolute horrible QC on these. My copy of this was significantly dish warped right out of the package and had some surface noise in spots. A waste of $30.
I was lucky with the other two. I was on the fence about selling my original and swapping it out. Now I definitely will not! Thank you.
I like 154, but this is the one for me. This appears to be a fairly well pressed medium weight vinyl copy with faithful artwork reproduction. I've owned multiple copies over the years and the mastering here is clean and clear. A little groove swing out of Being Sucked In Again. Some very minor surface noise during Heartbeat and a bit of static as Mercy gets going. Nothing disruptive, but not perfect either.
which has the better sound? Any reissue worh it? thanks
