Arnold Bax - London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bryden Thomson, Martyn Hill - Symphony No. 7 / Four Songs mp3 album
Complete your Arnold Bax - London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bryden Thomson, Martyn Hill collection. Four Songs For Tenor And Orchestra.
7 is regarded as Bax's compositional farewell, No. 4 as "cheerful and blustery. The form is sometimes cyclical, with opening material returning in another guise, which, for the naked ear, is difficult to discern. Most memorable are the truly beautiful, luxuriously lyrical melodies that abound especially in the slow movements. There are two sets of Bax symphonies: one with Bryden Thomson with the London Philharmonic and Ulster Orchestra or this newer set with Vernon Handley and the BBC Philharmonic. Unfortunately, the Thomson set is out-of-print right now. I own both and I appreciate both conductors' efforts. Not one of Bax's symphonies are alike and they are all engrossing sonic adventures. I won't bore you with any more details other than this set is brilliantly played by the BBC Philharmonic. Such outstanding musicianship and Handley's dedication to Bax is truly a spectacle to behold.

Solo: Martyn Hill tenor. Orchestra: London Philharmonic. Conductor: Bryden Thomson. Sir arnold bax. (1883-1953). 7. 47:34. I won't say much about the songs. Some, maybe many listeners will find them congenial, I don't. My sense of Bax's vocal line is that it is somewhat laboured. 7: I. Allegro. London Philharmonic Orchestra & Bryden Thomson.
