A Love Supreme is generally considered to be among Coltrane's greatest works, as it melded the hard bop sensibilities of his early career with the free jazz style he adopted later. A Love Supreme is a suite about redemption, a work of pure spirit and song, that encapsulates all the struggles and aspirations of the 1960s. This album came out from John Coltrane in 1965. It is an album that resolves and doesn't resolve at the same time, and subsequently has garnered him much attention. This musical release is a spiritual experience.

A Love Supreme is the 34th album by legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, his ninth under Impulse! Records, released January 1965. It was recorded in the space of one day, on December 9th 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey. The album was performed by Coltrane himself and his quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. But thankfully now, through the merciful hand of God, I do perceive and have been fully reinformed of his omnipotence. It is truly a love supreme. Coltrane’s first solo album (eponymous) was released later that year: supposedly the epiphany was a calling to make music. A Love Supreme is considered one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, calling it Coltrane’s masterpiece becoming a trope among critics, for its spiritual undertone.

John Coltrane and his classic quartet of pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones recorded the album in December of 1964, and released it on Impulse! in February of 1965. Now fifty years old, A Love Supreme has captured the imagination of anyone who has heard it, perhaps more so than any other jazz album. A Love Supreme received two Grammy nominations, Downbeat’s readers crowned it 1965’s best album, and it went on to sell over half a million copies, making it the second highest selling jazz album of all time.

John Coltrane: A Love Supreme by Robert Spencer, published on June 1, 1997. The fourth part, "Psalm," is a musical setting of the poem, psalm, hymn entitled "A Love Supreme" in the liner notes. The only quibble I have with the 20-bit release is that "Psalm" was still not made a separate track on the CD; as on the first CD release, it remains tied to Part 3, "Pursuance
