Kip Hanrahan - Piri Thomas / Every Child Is Born A Poet mp3 album
And how good to hear an album that lives up to it. This rich and multifaceted 27-track CD is based on the soundtrack to Jonathan Robinson's film about Piri Thomas, the Nuyorican "poet laureate", assembled from the poet's own readings and sessions led by auteur/producer Kip Hanrahan. The tracks are played by names familiar from Hanrahan's work: Alfredo Triff, Robby Ameen, Stefon Harris, Fernando Saunders, etc and Latin trumpet star Tedulo "Chocolate" Armenteros. Thomas, now in his 70s, has a speaking voice that is still powerful, resonant and urgent. If you enjoyed Chavez Ravine, you will find this similarly fascinating. Every Child Is Born a Poet may lack the hits of Ry Cooder's LA opus, but it's packed with a similar kind of engaging detail.

His childhood neighborhood in the Spanish Harlem section of New York City was riddled with crime and violence. According to Thomas, children were expected to be gang members at a young age, and Thomas was no exception.

Producer’s asides: A brief note about the singer: Any song Silvana touches becomes tango, and any tango Silvana touches becomes hers. That’s obvious when you see her perform on stage, on film, at dinner, whatever – and that’s the real reason making this record made sense. I mean, I’d already said everything I had to say about tango through the work I did with Astor.
