In his first season as owner, Buss guided the Lakers to a title in what would be the beginning of the Showtime era in Los Angeles. In over 30 years of successfully compiling star teams, Dr. Buss has lifted the Larry O’Brien trophy 10 times. Since 1979, the Lakers have the league’s highest winning percent at 66%. For as long as he’s owned the Lakers, his teams have found themselves in the Finals for over half of those years. When he enters the locker rooms to celebrate with his teams, the number of Hall of Famers that have sprayed him with champagne is enough to strike fellow owners rich with envy. Most owners would have to struggle to find players for their city’s Mount Rushmore, where Dr. Buss has to struggle with finding a bigger mountain on which to put them all.
We're not going to sell the team," Buss said. I can speak for myself mostly, but I think my dad's legacy is so strong with the basketball world. When you think of the Lakers, you think of Dr. Buss. We want to keep that forever. Not even a carefully constructed résumé could prepare Buss for some of this. After he graduated from USC with a degree in business administration, Buss served as a "coaching associate" for the Lakers during the 2006-07 season. He attended daily meetings, went to all road games and sometimes gave input to Coach Phil Jackson and assistants Kurt Rambis, Brian Shaw, Frank Hamblen and Jim Cleamons. The Lakers lost to Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs and then Buss was assigned to the business part of the franchise, as per his father's wishes. He spent the 2007-08 season sitting in on p meetings and studying ticketing concepts.

Jeanie Marie Buss (born September 26, 1961) is controlling owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Buss is a daughter of Jerry Buss, a real estate investor who later owned the Lakers and other sports businesses. At age 19, she started in the family business as general manager of the Los Angeles Strings professional tennis team. Buss later became the owner of the Los Angeles Blades professional roller hockey team.
Little did Laker fans know that Dr. Buss would become one of the most successful owners in the history of all team sports. That same year, a fortunate flip of the coin would change the Lakers and the NBA forever. The winner of a coin toss would get the first pick in that year’s draft. That toss of fate brought Earvin Magic Johnson to the Lakers (we’ll address Magic’s rookie game 6 performance in a few paragraphs). A year after that, a surprised assistant coach named Pat Riley was promoted to coach after Paul Westhead was fired 11 games into the season. Riles was the final piece of the Showtime Lakers that would define 80s basketball and Laker fans’ standards for years to come. When Chick passed away in 2002, the entire Laker nation mourned.
