Cotton Mather - The Crafty Flower Arranger mp3 album
I hesitate to post Cotton Mathers' s rarer than rare, The Crafty Flower Arranger for a number of reasons. Number one I don't own an original copy, or even possess a burned copy from an original. Number two, the best rip I was able to locate on MP3 sharing sites was a paltry 128 kbps, half of what I personally rips my CDs and records at. Strangely enough, I was able to find this at a slightly higher bit rate on Soulseek, but with much inferior quality than the 128 kbps version I'm hosting. Finally, and most significantly, this is an ethical dilemma. If you like Cotton Mather, or for that matter have an inclination for quality guitar-pop in general, then it's a safe bet to say that you love/will love their debut album, 1994's Cotton Is King. The Crafty Flower Arranger is effectively a CD of demos for that very record, making it no small object of intrigue to die-hard CM fans.
Cotton Mather's frontman and songwriter Robert Harrison formed the band Future Clouds and Radar, with a self-titled CD released on the Star Apple Kingdom label. Future Clouds and Radar was named Debut Artist of the Year by Harp magazine in 2007. Future Clouds and Radar followed up their eponymous debut with Peoria in 2009. Whit Williams and Dana Myzer formed a new band, Stockton, and have released one album. Myzer has relocated to London and joined British guitar pop band Farrah. Original bassist Matt Hovis teamed with Kevin Whitley (drummer on The Crafty Flower Arranger) and 16 Deluxe vocalist Carrie Clark to form Pretty Please in 2004. The group released one EP which Harrison produced.

This lineup recorded a demo, Crafty Flower Arranger, in 1992, which was never officially released but was widely bootlegged in the wake of the group's later success. Some tracks were re-recorded in far superior versions on the band's debut album, 1994's Cotton Is King. The Squeeze influence is particularly strong on this record; Harrison sounds uncannily like Glenn Tilbrook on several songs. Cotton Mather's legacy proved strong, however, and in 2012 - thanks to fan support solicited through a Kickstarter campaign - Harrison released a deluxe double-disc reissue of Kontiki on his own Star Apple Kingdom label. He also got the band back together for a reunion performance at 2012's SXSW, playing the album in its entirety. Harrison soon began working on a new Cotton Mather project, delving into the I Ching for inspiration with a plan to write 64 songs, one for each of the book's hexagrams.
