Parallel Lives is an atmospheric album, no doubt, but the atmosphere produced feels too light and airy at times as Gates seem to be more concerned with making beautiful sounding music rather than giving life to their songs, something that truly makes the listener fully realize the beauty beneath the clouds. Their 2014 release leans heavily on the power behind many post-rock bands, crescendos and apexes. Yet, despite its ability to blend post-rock and emo the record felt too much in line with its influences, a borrowed sound. While the loud to soft technique is still common within Parallel Lives, the sound feels fresh and original, a definitive sound that Gates can call their own. Maybe that’s what maturity means in terms of music, a discovery of a unique sound, something the band can latch onto and experiment with without the fear of imitating another artist too closely.

Gate’s, Parallel Lives, marks the band’s second release through Pure Noise Records. Right away the album kicks off with a calming drum/piano ambiance in Forget that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s clear within the first few tracks that Gates intends to branch out and make something new. Parallel Lives works best as a whole. The music is relaxing and entrancing, leaving room for the lyrics to be poignant and thought-provoking.

In September 2014, Gates premiered a new song titled "Low" from their first full-length album. In September, the band released another song from the album titled "Not My Blood" and premiered "Born Dead" via Alternative Press. Bloom & Breathe was released on October 21, 2014 via Pure Noise Records. It was recorded at VuDu Studios and produced by Mike Watts. In April 2016, the band debuted a music video for their new song, "Habit". The track comes from their second release, Parallel Lives on Pure Noise Records that appeared on June 3, 2016. As opposed to the previous record, Dye began using a piano and a sampler to develop songs such as "Color Worn". the album was described as an "airy and ethereal listen" Style.
