Since earning his spurs playing with Jack McDuff during the 1980s, guitarist Dave Stryker has recorded frequently and effectively as a leader in the decades that followed. Keystone is a solid session with tenor saxophonist Stephen Riley, drummer Quincy Davis, plus up-and-coming organist Jared Gold.

Dave Stryker (born March 30, 1957) is an American jazz guitarist. He has 21 CD's as a leader to date, and has been a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and Kevin Mahogany, among others. Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years. € He was voted one of the Top Ten Guitarists in the 2001 Critics and Readers poll of Down Beat, and has been elected a Rising Star in the 2004-2007 Downbeat Critics Poll.

Guitarist and bandleader Dave Stryker straddles the line between art and entertainment as well as anyone in jazz. Equally adept at shuffle beats, funk grooves and straight jazz time, drummer McClenty Hunter kept things moving in fine style. In the midst of "Impressions," all it took was a glance in his direction by Stryker to generate a change in the drummer's rhythms and dynamics.

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 29 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years. He was recently voted once again into the 2018 Downbeat Readers and Critics Polls for the 10th time. The album opener, Move on Up, alone, makes it well worth purchasing the full album. Jared’s organ just KICKS IT OUT on this superb tune! Stevie Wonder’s Too High is one of the best performances of the tune I’ve ever heard. The recording is just flawless.

Dave Stryker Organ Quartet. Keystone SteepleChase Productions. Stryker stretches out while putting his skills as a soloist on full display, especially on the title cut – a highflying swing tune where he solos with originality and soul on chorus after chorus. Stryker is accompanied by Jared Gold (on Hammond B3), Quincy Davis (drums), and Stephen Riley (sax), whose breathy tone is the perfect complement to Stryker’s playing – and all know how to build solos and keep them moving. All but two tracks are at least eight minutes long, and the group’s take on Watch What Happens clocks in at almost 13 minutes.
