The Blue Nile are a musical group from Glasgow, Scotland.
While created almost solely without benefit of live instruments, it is nevertheless an immensely warm and human album; Paul Buchanan's plaintive vocals and poignant songs are uncommonly moving, and his deployment of lush synth washes and electronic percussion is never gratuitous, each song instead crafted with painterly precision
Virgin, Linn Records. Hats (CD, Album, Promo).
LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Blue Nile Format: Vinyl. I discovered Blue Nile when I was working in a grocery store that played soft rock and they played The Blue Nile's "Downtown Lights. I loved it! This was back in the day before the Internet and I can't remember how I figured out who sang the song. But, I figured it who it was and bought the cassette and immediately fell in love The Blue Nile. I eventually replaced the cassette with a CD, which was even better. Every song on the album is excellent
The album was released in October 1989 simultaneously in both the UK and the US: since The Blue Nile was essentially unknown in the United States in 1989, the cover artwork for the US release of Hats was slightly modified for marketing reasons, with the band's name in larger letters Three singles were released from the album: the first, "The Downtown Lights&.
Band Name The Blue Nile. Released date October 1989. Members owning this album0. 1. Over the Hillside. 2. The Downtown Lights. 3. Let's Go Out Tonight. 4. Headlights On the Parade. 5. From a Late Night Train. Other productions from The Blue Nile.
After 'Hats' the Blue Nile largely abandoned the synth heavy approach for a more traditional guitar led sound, one that's never less than pleasant but can't help but come over as far less subtle and distinctive. The temptation is to be overly critical and begrudge the band for not attempting to follow up 'Hats' with something equally unconventional but really, with the gift of hindsight, everything about the album screams 'one off cult affair'; an album for the musical obsessive if you like
The Blue Nile are (were) mostly a two-men band (P. Buchanan & R. Bell) from Glasgow which, in the mid-Eighties, produced two stunningly good and awesomely recorded discs: "A walk across the rooftops", their debut album, and this "Hats". Both records were issued and mastered by Linn Records UK, not a surprise, considering the band came from Glasgow :-) In 1998 they released what appears to be their last (latest?) album, "Peace at last". A walk across the rooftops" sold quite well (nearly 100,000 copies) and was something very innovative, considering. Their second album, "Hats", has been published on CD and I am not sure it ever made it to vinyl. The Linn Records site displays no trace of this. Anyway, I'm about to write a few notes on the CD release only.
