Barney Kessel, The Monty Alexander Trio - Spontaneous Combustion mp3 album

Spontaneous Combustion. This excellent straight-ahead set (which has been reissued on CD along with a "bonus" cut, "Shaw Nuff") finds pianist Monty Alexander, along with bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, lighting a fire under guitarist Barney Kessel and pushing him to some of his more heated playing. Kessel performs four of his better originals plus "'Round Midnight," "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," "Everything I Have Is Yours" and "Get Me to the Church on Time," sounding inspired by the company he was keeping.

Spontaneous Combustion is a music studio album recording by SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION (Psychedelic/Space Rock/Progressive Rock) released in 1972 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. At it's heart, the music is garage rock rather than any serious attempt to write songs, and sounds rather under-rehearsed in places, the musicians pushing their own creative levels as hard as possible and being a bit oblivious to the fact that the playing often comes across as being a bit on the sloppy side.

Monty Alexander at Ronnie Scott's, London. Background information. In Los Angeles, in 1964, Alexander recorded his first album, Alexander the Great, for Pacific Jazz at the age of 20. The album was very energetic and upbeat with the climax tune being "Blues for Jilly". Alexander recorded with Milt Jackson in 1969, with Ernest Ranglin in 1974 and in Europe the same year with Ed Thigpen. He toured regularly in Europe and recorded there, mostly with his classic trio for MPS Records. He also toured around 1976 with the steelpan player Othello Molineaux. 1987 Spontaneous Combustion, Barney Kessel. 1989 Chicken Scratch, Lee "Scratch" Perry. 1990 Snowy Morning Blues, Howard Alden.

On Pete Townshend's 1983 album Scoop, Townshend paid homage to the guitarist with the instrumental song "To Barney Kessel". Spontaneous Combustion (Contemporary, 1987) with Monty Alexander Trio. Red Hot and Blues (Contemporary, 1988) with Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, Ben Riley.
