I didn’t have a turntable then, just a cassette player, nevertheless, I was digging the album art, enjoying the play on words of Whole (Hall) Oates, along with the illustration of little Billy (William) Penn that adorned the can (just like the statue of him standing atop City Hall), where the smell of the vinyl took me right back to.

Album · 1972 · 11 Songs. Their 1972 debut found the pair trying on a few different styles, from the glints of pastoral folk that drift across All Our Love to the shimmering, vibraphone-dashed soul of Fall in Philadelphia. Producer Arif Mardin’s cinematic string arrangements on Goodnight and Goodmorning give the otherwise hushed song an emotional heft, hinting at the duo’s soulful sound to come. Prior to releasing their debut album Whole Oats, Daryl Hall and John Oates had sketched out some demos, originally released as the Past Times Behind collection (since reissued under a variety of titles). Those recordings found them earnest and tentative, in the throes of their folk-rock phase, and they led to Atlantic signing the duo, putting them under the tutelage of producer Arif Mardin, who had previously helmed records by the Rascals and Dusty Springfield's landmark Dusty in Memphis. If the rest of the album was as strong as these four songs, Whole Oats would have been a crackerjack debut, but they're the highlights on what is essentially a promising debut. The first side has some nice moments - the lightly skipping "All Our Love," Hall's quiet, introspective "Waterfall" - but the second side gets stuck in a series of sleepy ballads that derails whatever momentum the album gained.

It includes none of the filler material, so you get to enjoy the whole album. It is soul-flavored rock, and good music to boot. The times are mostly album versions. The only exception is Adult Education, which is the shorter version. The song I Can't Go For That, hard to find as an album version, runs full time. And so do most of the other songs-and no 12" single versions either. What you got on the album, more or less, is what you get here.
