Kathleen Ferrier - Wenn Der Stimme Flügel Wachsen • When The Voice Finds Wings To Fly mp3 album

Kathleen Ferrier (1912–1953) started singing professionally late; she was thirty when she did her first performance as a soloist (in Händel’s ‘Messiah’). She only performed in two operas, Britten’s ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ (1946) and Gluck’s ‘Orfeo ed Eudridice’ (1947). Her rising star as a highly characteristic alto was cut short when she died at only 41; from breast cancer. Luckily, she managed to do many recordings in her too brief career, among the most treasured are Mahler’s ‘Das Lied von der Erde’ and ‘Kindertotenlieder’.

In the course of her professional life the English contralto Kathleen Ferrier made a large number of recordings. In the summer of 1944 she signed a contract with Columbia, which lasted until February 1946. She then transferred to Decca, and remained with them until her death in October 1953. Apart from her studio recordings, many of her live performances and broadcast recitals were recorded, sometimes privately.

Part of the individual timbre of the Kathleen Ferrier voice is due to the fact that it is a natural sound with no conservatory training. Both Hutchinson and Henderson conceded that that the voice was already there when she came to them and that they merely refined and coached the instrument. On May 17, 1943 Kathleen Ferrier appeared in . Handel’s Messiah at Westminster Abbey with fellow soloists Isobele Baillie, Peter Pears and William Parsons, conducted by Reginald Jacques. Benjamin Britten was in the audience

The Kathleen Ferrier Scholarship Fund, administered by the Royal Philharmonic Society, has since 1956 made annual awards to aspiring young professional singers. Early life After her Carlisle victories, Ferrier began to receive offers of singing engagements. When Albert Wilson joined the army in 1940, Ferrier reverted to her maiden name, having until then sung as 'Kathleen Wilson'. In December 1940 she appeared for the first time professionally as 'Kathleen Ferrier' in a performance of Handel's Messiah, under Hutchinson's direction. In early 1941 she successfully auditioned as a singer with the Council for the Encouragement of the Arts (CEMA), which provided concerts and other entertainments to military camps, factories and other workplaces.
