He has recorded with Galt McDermot, Jeff Beck, James Brown, and . He is also well-known for his performance on Jeff Beck's Wired album and the soundtrack for the 1979 film version of Hair. He co-wrote "Head For Backstage Pass". Not to be confused with his father Wilbur Bascomb S. jazz trumpeter (1916-1972).

Paul Bascomb (February 12, 1912, Birmingham, Alabama – December 2, 1986 (aged 74), Chicago) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, noted for his extended tenure with Erskine Hawkins. He is a 1979 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Bascomb was a founding member of the Bama State Collegians, which was led by Erskine Hawkins and eventually became his big band. Bascomb's brother Dud played in this ensemble as well. Bascomb remained in this ensemble until 1944, aside from a brief interval in 1938–39 where he played in Count Basie's orchestra after Herschel Evans's death. He recorded for States Records in 1952; these sides were reissued by Delmark Records in the 1970s. From 1953 to 1955 he recorded for Parrot. was active as a performer nearly up until the time of his death.

This CD collects together tenor saxophonist Paul Bascomb's United recordings of 1952. The material is pretty basic and R&B-ish, but fun, with the highlights including "Blues and the Beat," "Pink Cadillac," "Soul and Body," and "Indiana. The backup group includes trumpeter Eddie Lewis and pianist Duke Jordan, and the CD reissue adds four alternate takes to the original 13 selections.

Jazz music styles were seen by Nazi authorities as rebellious but, ironically, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels conceived of using the style in shortwave radio broadcasts aimed initially at the United Kingdom, and later the United States, after the German declaration of war on 11 December 1941.

Bascomb also released a solo effort, Wilbur Bascomb and Future Dreams, in 1977. King, Hank Crawford, George Benson, Bo Diddley, Mick Taylor, The Players Association, and many others. He frequently found himself grooving alongside drummer Bernard Purdie, working as a tight knit and undeniably funky rhythm section. 1976 was a landmark year in the world of bass. No longer stationed in the back, bass players began taking the spotlight as super-charged band members and solo artists. Stanley Clarke’s School Days, Jaco Pastorius’ self-titled record, and Bootsy Collins’ Stretchin’ Out in Bootsy’s Rubber Band redefined the role and tone of the instrument. Bascomb Jr. was in good company as he joined Jeff Beck for Wired, stretching out with many of the new techniques of his contemporaries.
