The final volume of this four-volume chronicling of Prez' stand at Olivia's Patio Lounge in 1956 is no less fine than its preceding three volumes. Everything here is stretched out to a comfortable length, everybody is taking their time, giving the music plenty of room to breathe and most importantly, giving Young all the time he needs to get deep inside the music itself. Nice readings of the ballad "I Cover the Waterfront," "Talk of the Town" and a swinging "Pennies from Heaven" are the big tickets here, imbued with an economy from Bill Potts' Trio.

Lester Young (tenor saxophone) Bill Potts (piano) Norman Williams (bass) Jim Lucht (drums). Recorded at Olivia Davis' Patio Lounge, Washington, . Remastering by Joe Tarantino (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). EAC extraction logfile from 27. February 2011, 3:35.

Lester Young In Washington, . An absurdity perpetuated in jazz literature by retrograde members of the musical establishment and only lately beginning to be dispelled, is that in the final decade and a half of his life, Lester Young was a broken shadow of the protean originator who changed the soloist’s art in the late 1930s and early ’40s. Evidence to the contrary is apparent in this delightful recording made in 1956, a particularly good year for Young

Some jazz critics contend that Lester "The Prez" Young went downhill after World War II, but don't believe it for a minute. The seminal tenorist (who died in 1958) continued to excel during the last years of his life, and one of the great things about his 1950s output is the fact that LPs gave him a lot more room to stretch out. Underscoring the excellence of late period Prez, this album is the last of four volumes documenting an appearance at Olivia Davis' Patio Lounge in Washington, DC in 1956.
