Commonly regarded as the worst album in Bob Dylan's catalog, Dylan is a collection of nine outtakes from the Self Portrait album Columbia assembled after the singer briefly jumped ship for David Geffen's fledgling Asylum Records. Dylan didn't want the record to be released, and it's easy to see why - the album is a collection of covers that are poorly performed on purpose
Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue: Hard Rain captured this tour at the tail end when the participants were exhausted, burned-out and disillusioned. This album by contrast, is at the start of the tour and it absolutely smokes from start to finish. Definitive versions of 'Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Isis, and Hurricane. Until relatively recently, Dylan was really badly served by his live album releases. They were frequently poor representations of the tour and often included mystifying song choices. Thankfully this was corrected by the Bootleg series of released, long may they continue. Despite touring often, Dylan has only released a handful of live contemporary live albums, which document a tour he has just recently completed. Most of them aren’t very good. Before the Flood (1974) is the first live album Dylan released and still one of the best.
Why did the Self-Portrait 2lp got voted by poll for Dylan& worst album at that time when it was the best impression on him? I guess they pulled it to pieces for it& conceptional work - not being a "Hit Album" and the featured country musicians which were outdated in 1970. Just another example how hard critics can fail.
