101 Simian Mobile Disco. The beloved duo talk modular synths, collaboration and ponytails. Machine Love: Simian Mobile Disco. Ryan Keeling discovers how a sequencer and a saloon in the California desert both played a part in the duo's new album. Every musician needs to take action to keep themselves fresh from time to time, but James Ford and Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco have really gone to extremes this time: they've completely abandoned every tool they previously used to make music. Simian Mobile Disco's biography.

Their last offering 'Temporary Pleasure' was an album that the duo crammed with what they hoped to be potential hits. Each track was quick, catchy, and seemed to nag for recognition from the summer charts. Despite achieving moderate success commercially, it wasn't received very well by critics, or indeed so well by some fans. The electronica twosome may arguably have had raised eye brows at this out come, so it might put things in to perspective then to realise that this follow up has been released a mere sixteen months later.

It's an album mired in its own dark, sometimes off-putting production juices, relishing in the slight tweaks and glacial buildups one may only appreciate on the dance floor. Lead-off track "Aspic" is catchy, what with its trademark Simian emphasis on bass and the very clearly defined (particularly in regards to what follows) rhythm, but it's not something the average raver would find promotes casual fist-pumping.
