Jennifer Warnes was familiar with Leonard Cohen from a tour of duty as one of his backup singers in the early '70s, but this collection of Cohen's songs must have shocked her AM radio fans who knew her from her '70s country-pop hits and her movie themes, if they were even able to connect the woman who sang. It's the right time of the night for makin' love" with the one who declared "First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin" over stinging guitar work by Stevie Ray Vaughan on the opening track here

Famous Blue Raincoat is the sixth studio album recorded by the American singer Jennifer Warnes. Released in January 1987, Famous Blue Raincoat is a tribute to Leonard Cohen, with whom Warnes had toured as a backup singer in the 1970s. The album's songs span much of Cohen's career, from his 1969.

Famous Blue Raincoat is the sixth album by American singer Jennifer Warnes. Released in 1987, the album is comprised entirely of Leonard Cohen covers. The pair were friends, as Warnes had toured with Cohen as a backup singer throughout the 1970s. Famous Blue Raincoat Q&A.

Jennifer Warnes had mixed feelings ethically about the song's lyrical content, but admired Cohen's genius. He used the metrical foot Amphibrach in Famous Blue Raincoat. A long syllable with soft ones on both sides. It has a plodding rhythm which makes it feel like someone walking slowly and heavily, plodding sadly along.

Jennifer Warnes is a singer's singer, and Leonard Cohen is a songwriter's songwriter. They are each at the front of their game and are brilliant in unique, almost tangible ways. I am not certain whose idea the original album was, but what a wondrous pairing! Warnes adds new levels to each of the excellent Cohen songs she interprets here and does a remarkable job on her songwriting collaboration with Cohen, "Song of Bernadette. Warnes' immaculate interepretation of "Famous Blue Raincoat" blows Tori Amos' well-known version out of the water! Just as exquisite are "Bird On A Wire," "First We Take Manhattan" and "Ain't No Cure For Love. Warnes and her co-producer, C. Roscoe Beck, handpicked a batch of amazing musicians for this 1987 CD, including a Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar performance that is mind-blowing!
