Hansel and Gretel (German: Hänsel und Gretel) is an opera by nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, who described it as a Märchenoper (fairy-tale opera). The libretto was written by Humperdinck's sister, Adelheid Wette, based on the Grimm brothers' fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel"

COMPOSER: Engelbert Humperdinck. PERFORMER: Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. More from this artist. Engelbert Humperdinck.

Humperdinck: Hänsel und Gretel. You went out of your way to get it to me, after the first one was defected. And it came straight from Leipzig. German composer Engelbert Humperdinck's 1893 opera Hansel und Gretel is surely one of the sweetest, gentlest, most tuneful, yet exciting pieces of music ever written for children or adults. It has all the qualities of a great fairy tale. What's more, it has been fortunate over the years to have received a number of good recordings, in particular the 1953 mono version from Karajan, Schwarzkopf, and company (EMI). But for listeners who won't put up with monaural sound, this reissue from RCA, with only the slightest hint of tape hiss, provides a pleasing, mid-priced alternative.

Elisabeth Grümmer (Hänsel), Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (Gretel), Else Schürhoff (Witch), Maria von Ilosvay (Mother), Josef Metternich (Father), Anny Felbermayer (Sandman, Dew Fairy). Philharmonia Orchestra, Herbert von Karajan. it's remarkably good for its age and the GROC remastering used here brings out more detail than earlier incarnations.
