The Mamas & The Papas were formed by husband and wife John and Michelle Phillips, formerly of The New Journeymen, and Denny Doherty, formerly of The Mugwumps. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in The Mugwumps. In 1966 they recorded their second album The Mamas And The Papas. I Saw Her Again" was the first single from the album before release. When the album was released in 1966, it peaked at number four in the US, continuing the band's success. Words of Love" was released as the second single and "Dancing in the Street" was released as the third and final single. Deliver came in the autumn of 1966.

The Mamas & the Papas were one of many bands to capture the zeitgeist of the 1960s counter-culture movement. Formed in New York by folkie John Phillips, the quartet moved from New York to Los Angeles in the mid-'60s, and promptly caught the ear of MCA's Lou Adler. The band's airy harmonies, supplied by Mama Cass, Michelle Philips and Denny Doherty, shimmered around John Phillips' poetic lyrics, adding just the right glow to what would become the group's signature sound.

For the Mamas & the Papas, it happened twice, with their first album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, and, on a more complex level, with this album - which was astonishing, given that they had a major upheaval in their membership in the midst of recording it. The Mamas & the Papas (also sometimes referred to as "Cass- John-Michelle-Denny," which might well have been the official title until that lineup started to shift) was recorded over a period of almost four months, in the wake of the massive success of their first two singles and the debut album, issued in Februar.
