Music Revelation Ensemble: No Wave I know, Blood Ulmer and his boys probably spent more time plugging in their amps than knocking off the music. Too much of it is free-jazz fucking around, even less faithful to their nuclear fusion in its carelessness than the Rough Trade album in its care. Still, when David Murray starts to blow on the one they call "Baby Talk," and not even over one of Jackson-Ali's funkier beats, it's fun, and a revelation. But up this one a notch for erring in the right wrong direction.

The all-star cast on this album alone makes this album worth listening to. At times, James Blood Ulmer's guitar playing - while always terrific - is almost an afterthought as the other musicians dominate. Ronald Shannon Jackson's muscular drumming is always a delight to listen to, and he and bassist Amin Ali really drive the music. David Murray seems like the front man with his soaring and searing sax playing. Still, this is Ulmer's album and his music.
