Samuel Gene Maghett (February 14, 1937 – December 1, 1969), known as Magic Sam, was an American Chicago blues musician. He was born in Grenada County, Mississippi, United States, and learned to play the blues from listening to records by Muddy Waters and Little Walter. After moving to Chicago at the age of 19, he was signed by Cobra Records and became well known as a bluesman after the release of his first record, "All Your Love", in 1957. He was known for his distinctive tremolo guitar playing.

While the sound quality leaves something to be desired, fans of electric Chicago blues should hear Magic Sam live. Recorded at two separate locations, the Alex Club in Chicago in 1963 and 1964 and the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in 1969, this disc captures the raw energy not only of the musicians, but the crowds' tremendous response to them. Sam is in his natural environment at the Alex Club with an interchanging quintet, including electric pianist Tyrone Carter and tenor saxophonists Eddie Shaw and . Reed, playing in front of a rowdy audience, ready to party.

Magic Sam: Magic Sam - Live. One of a few Blues albums that simply have to be in any serious collection. A classic, high-energy guitar blues album. Sound quality is not matching today's standards. Live at the Alex Club (October, 1963) and at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival (August 1969). Article properties: Magic Sam: Magic Sam - Live. Interpret: Magic Sam. Album titlle: Magic Sam - Live.

Raw Blues: Magic Sam Live 1969. The audio on RockBeat's 2012 release Raw Blues: Magic Sam 1969 is muddy and ragged, sounding like a bootleg because that's essentially what it is: an audience tape from December 1, 1969, recorded just five short months before Magic Sam's death. It may be raw - some may find it too murky to listen to over an extended period - but Magic Sam is in fiery form and his guitar pierces through the gunk, sounding limber, alive, and electric.
