Sometimes you don't want to listen to a song that makes you go there. But that's what this record is. This record makes you go there. But it's also, I have to say, one of the most rewarding musical experiences of my life, making Joanne.
The World Won't Listen is a compilation album by The Smiths, released in February 1987 by Rough Trade Records. It reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, staying on the charts for 15 weeks. The album was conceived as a collection of the singles and their B-sides from 1985 to 1987
After the release of 2013’s Artpop, which was not a hit with critics and fans, Gaga went through a semi-reinvention, teaming up with Tony Bennett for an album and dialing back her usual antics. Three years later, Gaga has resurfaced as a new artist, different from the one we first saw in 2008 on The Fame. Gaga’s latest album, Joanne, can be described as a country album but it’s more than that. There are hints of jazz, pop and rock.
Joanne – named after the singer-songwriter’s late aunt, but also her own middle name – is Lady Gaga’s way of drawing a line, at least for now, under the perception of her as the girl with the lobster on her head. Having taken her self-focused art project to the far end of the conceptualist spectrum on the 2013 album Artpop, the singer was left with diminishing sales and the awareness that her music had been eclipsed by an image that was spiralling into parody. Joanne is Gaga with the look-at-me layer peeled away. For the first time, she’s made an album using not much more than the resources that predate her stardom: the big, clear voice and life-as-she-sees-it honesty. The razzle-dazzle in her hasn’t entirely dissipated – more of which below – but it takes second place to her desire to be seen as just Stefani Germanotta for a while.
