How Do You Spell Heaven is the 24th album to be released by lo-fi band Guided By Voices. It was released on August 11, 2017. The Birthday Democrats" – 2:30. Steppenwolf Mausoleum" – 3:21. Cretinous Number Ones" – 1:45. They Fall Silent" – 0:55.
This feels like the last album for Guided by Voices. The band also released a new single from the upcoming album Just to Show You. In 2018, Guided by Voices announced the future release of the double album Zeppelin Over China, Warp and Woof and Rise of the Ants for 2019 Band members.
Guided By Voices issued their first-ever double album, August By Cake, in March. The expansive record also marked the band’s leader Robert Pollard’s 100th (!) full-length to date. While most bands would consider taking off the rest of the year after such a milestone of a release, GBV are certainly not like most bands: On August 11th, they’re returning with their second LP of 2017, How Do You Spell Heaven. Due out through the group’s own GBV In. the 15-track effort was recorded in both New York and Ohio. The album promises off-kilter rhythmic jolts; krazy chords; purposefully imperfect harmonies; and fragmented structures that start and stop on a coin of small denomination and go somewhere else, and quickly. As a teaser, Pollard & co. have let loose the lead single and closing track, a steady little rocker called Just to Show You. Hear it below (via Paste).
Just to Show You - Guided by Voices Via SoundCloud. Since reuniting in 2010, Guided by Voices ’ trajectory has essentially played out as a LARP-worthy reenactment of their ’90s narrative. After a cavalcade of ramshackle releases from the beloved classic line-up, Pollard once again dismantled the group and reformulated it anew. And just as he did about 20 years ago, he’s turned to guitarist Doug Gillard to be his e right-hand man, and to serve as the steely anchor of a crew that now includes guitarist Bobby Bare J. bassist Mark Shue, and drummer Kevin March.

Wrong album? Let us know. Expand player Collapse player. HOW DO YOU SPELL HEAVEN Vinyl Record. 2017 release from the uber-prolific Robert Pollard and his main day job, Guided By Voices. Guided by Voices is on a roll. One could argue that GBV is never not on a roll, that Robert Pollard's output plows past the word "prolific" like prolific is standing still in a snowbank; and that's true, but this new version of the band (Doug Gillard, Bobby Bare Jr, Mark Shue, Kevin March) has given Pollard new tools to complement his song-hammer. Guided By Voices packs more musical ideas into a single album than most bands do into their entire careers, and it does it the old-fashioned way: by keeping them short. Led by the compulsively prolific Robert Pollard, the Dayton, Ohio-bred group rarely breaks the two-minute mark-three minutes would be edging toward proggy self-indulgence-in its sharp, jagged nuggets of British Invasion-indebted power pop and shambolic garage rock. Kicking off with the clunk of a four-track hitting record, buried under tape hiss and lo-fi reverb effects, Pollard’s tunes stride in, bang out their bright and shiny hooks, then get out while the gettin’ is good, leaving room for two dozen tracks on a single record and a catalog of songs that numbers in the thousands.

Guided by Voices’ loud, psychedelic, garage rock is enticement enough to see the band live, but when they mix their music with their wild, incessant drinking habits, it makes for an even more fun and crazy time. With the band’s gigantic catalogue of songs created by their prolific songwriting, there is no doubt that Guided by Voices will have a massive setlist. Set list was mix of classic GBV songs, some deep cuts from Bob's extensive catalog and tracks off the new album Space Gun. Union Transfer is a great venue for GBV's sound. Report as inappropriate.
