And he's got the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, whose Mahler tradition dates back to guest appearances by the composer himself, at his service. Haitink's 1969 recording of the Ninth would be near the top of my shortlist of the finest recorded Ninths. In balancing the work's many elements, Haitink may excel everyone else. Another highlight is the Third Symphony, which is a "contender" even if it's overshadowed by the Jascha Horenstein recording. In fact, the two conductors' basic approaches are not that dissimilar to one another

For this 2012 Dreyer Gaido release, Gabriel Feltz and the Stuttgart Philharmonic present a warm and inviting performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in G major, his brightest and most engaging symphony. The last of Mahler's "Wunderhorn" symphonies, so called because of the use of his 1892 song, "Das himmlische Leben," the Fourth is the most joyous and childlike of his works, and its upbeat mood has made it extremely popular with audiences.

Bernard Haitink is one of the most sought-after Mahler conductors of our day. In this concert of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, recorded live at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, he conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The American Maria Ewing fascinates with her interpreation of the soprano solo featured in the work’s finale. Bernard Haitink first conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956. Beginning in 1963, Haitink was chief conductor for 25 years, during which time the orchestra developed significantly.

Elisabeth Sara Elly Ameling (born 8 February 1933) is a Dutch soprano, now retired, who was particularly known internationally for lieder recitals and for singing works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Performing with notable pianists and ensembles around the globe, she was awarded honours and recording prizes.
