Tug of War is the third solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released in April 1982. It was McCartney's first album released after the dissolution of Wings in April, 1981. Overall it was his 11th album since the break up of the Beatles. It was also McCartney's first album after the murder of former songwriting partner John Lennon. The album was produced by former Beatles producer George Martin and was a number one hit in many countries. Some critics hailed it as a return to form for McCartney

Tug of War is the third solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released in April 1982. It was McCartney’s first album released after the dissolution of Wings in April 1981. The album was produced by former Beatles producer George Martin and was a number in numerous countries. Following the release of the solo album McCartney II, Wings regrouped in July and October 1980 to rehearse several songs which later appeared on Tug of War and Pipes of Peace.

The official album songbook to accompany 'Tug Of War', released in 1982, 'Tug Of War' was Paul's first solo album post-Wings and the first released since the death of John Lennon (initial sessions for the album were abandoned following Lennon's death). While the title hints at an album about power struggles, Paul saw it more as an album "of opposites". As he says, it focuses on "duality. Yes and No, Up and Down, Man and Woman.

Conceptually, Tug of War is organized around two Paul McCartney-Stevie Wonder duets. The tune’s phonetic simplicity and its image of black and white piano keys as a metaphor for race relations combine to make a global children’s song as ingenuous as Happy Birthday, Wonder’s tribute to Martin Luther King. Here Today brings up the album’s most personal and painful aspect. Lennon and McCartney, after all, were icons of goodness in the Sixties, but even the Beatles’ utopia wasn’t immune to a tug of war that destroyed their collaboration and even, for a time, their friendship.
