We can dance if we want to We can leave your friends behind 'Cause your friends don't dance And if they don't dance Well they're no friends of mine. We can dance if we want to We've got all your life and mine As long as we abuse it Never gonna lose it Everything will work out right. I say, We can dance if we want to We can leave your friends behind 'Cause your friends don't dance And if they don't dance Well they're no friends of mine. In 1979, Wave 21 renamed themselves to Men Without Hats, after the punk band. The Doroschuk brothers, all three of whom are classically trained musicians, were born in Champaign, Illinois while their Canadian father was earning a doctoral degree. They moved to Montreal as young children when their parents returned to Canada. The group's name came about because the brothers, following a self-described principle of "style before comfort," refused to wear hats during. You've probably heard the A-side, maybe the album version. It's good, it's what draws the Hats' fans to their sound, quirky, catchy synth pop. Then there's the B-side, Freeways, Euromix no less, the song that makes you wonder why this wasn't plastered all over what was then alternative radio, college stations, modern 80's rock stations, etc., the kind of song that you buy a hundred records just to occasionally unearth a gem that will stick with you decades later, that thankfully has been included on a couple of recent compilations. It's the new wave take on the Autobahn theme (concept, not composition) by Kraftwerk, and in this mix delivered in English, French and German, which is certainly part of its charm, even if you're not fluent in each. It doesn't take much study to catch on to the imagery of 'Nationale 7' or 'Super 87', and for those Germanophones, it's intriguing to hear the fairly correct delivery, informed perhaps by fluent French pronunciation and possibly coached, but still accented voice, like a suave Bond accent to the American ear. The lyrics may come across a bit cheesy at times: "If you're feeling low, driving's the cure," but it is pop music, after all. Then, too, there's the insistent rhythm, like a train chugging along at a brisk but relaxed pace, all electronic, not overtly club oriented, yet certainly infectious enough to be dancable, interspersed with burbling synth effects and all analog searing leads, stabs and pads. Pure bliss.
