Darkness on the Edge of Town is the fourth studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on June 2, 1978. The album marked the end of a three-year gap between albums brought on by contractual obligations and legal battling with former manager Mike Appel. Although the album did not produce high-charting singles it remained on the charts for 97 weeks. A steady seller in Springsteen's catalog, it has been certified triple Platinum by the RIAA.
There's a place I dream about Where the sun never goes out. And the sky is deep and blue. Won't you take me there with you. Ohhh, we can begin again. Shed our skin, let the sun shine in. At the edge of the ocean We can start over again. There's a world I've always known Somewhere far away from home. When I close my eyes I see All the space and mystery. Pretty fucking, sunrise in sight In comes the morning, haunting us with the beams Solstice ain't as far as it used to be It begins to blur, we get older (Blur!) Summer's not as long as it used to be Everyday counts like crazy (Smoke, haze) Wanna get soaked? Wanna film a tape on the speed boat? We smell of Californication Strike a pose Everything grows in the Congo Everything grows Can you come when I call again? On comes the evening, gold seeking ends Piece in my hands worth twice than a friend And two limbs over shoulder, carried away Because I'm stronger and the Cong.
On the earlier album, for instance, the individual instruments were deliberately obscured to create the sense of one huge instrument. Here, the same power is achieved more naturally. Now that it can be heard, the E Street Band is clearly one of the finest rock & roll groups ever assembled. Yet the dominant instrumental focus of Darkness on the Edge of Town is Bruce Springsteen’s guitar. Like his songwriting and singing, Springsteen’s guitar playing gains much of its distinctiveness through pastiche. There are echoes of a dozen influences - Duane Eddy, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Buchanan, even Ennio Morricone’s Sergio Leone soundtracks - but the synthesis is completely Springsteen’s own.

The album truly sounds like a decent into deep waters. Light and friendly in the beginning and furious towards the end. A great, downward journey. It's nice how both versions of the album can be different, yet completely amazing experiences. Will Cobb Found these guys on their trip to NZ touring with Mastodon. One of the best live acts I've seen to date.
