The Tale of the King and the Clever Woman," to translate Orff's subtitle, is a traditional tale found in the folklore of many nations and cultures. Orff's version comes from one of the two most famous collections by the Grimm Brothers, commonly referred to as Grimms' Fairy Tales. Die Kluge contains neither a supernatural element nor much of the gruesome goings on that are frequently found in the volume. The burden of the story is that of greed being conquered by love and intelligence. It opens with a jailed farmer loudly bewailing his fate. It seems that he found a golden mortar and like a dutiful subject turned in the treasure to his King, over his clever daughter's warning that the King (with a well deserved reputation for covetousness) would only demand the matching golden pestle. This is precisely what happened and why the farmer is in jail.
