Jeannie C. Riley - Harper Valley P.T.A. / Widow Jones mp3 album
Harper Valley PTA" is a country song written by Tom T. Hall which became, in 1968, a major international hit single for country singer Jeannie C. Riley. The song was originally recorded by Margie Singleton, on Ashley Records A 5000 in July, 1968. Riley's record sold over six million copies as a single. It made Riley the first woman to top both the Billboard Hot 100 and the . Hot Country Singles charts with the same song, a feat that would go un-repeated until Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" in 1981.
Jeannie C. Riley (born Jeanne Carolyn Stephenson; October 19, 1945) is an American country music and gospel singer. I wanna tell you all a story 'bout a Harper Valley widowed wife, Who had a teenage daughter who attended Harper Valley Junior High, Well her daughter came home one afternoon and didn't even stop to play, And she said. Mom I got a note here from the Harper Valley PT. Well the note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high. It's reported you've been drinkin' and runnin' round with men and goin' wild . And shouldn't widow Jones be told to keep her window shades a pulled completely down. Well Mr. Harper couldn't be here cause he stayed too long at Kelly's Bar again. And if you smell Shirley Thompson's breath you'll find she's had a little nip of gin.
The album based on the title track is a fine recording that goes beyond the obvious attraction to the Tom T. Hall classic. It comes across nearly as a concept album that mirrors life in a small town in all its faults and tribulations, though not all songs make direct reference to Harper Valley. At the center of all this is the underrated voice of Jeannie C. Riley, which has the right combination of strength, sass, and vulnerability to make the songs come alive
