Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse mp3 album

Clubhouse is an album by American jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon. It was recorded in 1965, but not released until 1979 by Blue Note Records. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called Clubhouse "superb" and "mature late bebop". All compositions by Dexter Gordon, except where noted. I'm a Fool to Want You" (Joel Herron, Frank Sinatra, Jack Wolf) – 6:43.

Although tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon had moved to Europe in 1962, he made a return visit to the . in 1965 that resulted in both this album and Gettin' Around. Gordon teams up with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins for three of his originals, two obscurities, and a standard that ended up being the date's most memorable performance: "I'm a Fool to Want Yo. It is excellent music if not quite essential.

The 50s were Dexter Gordon’s wilderness years. Musically-speaking, it was a lost decade due to the fact that the six-foot six-inch Los Angeles-born saxophonist spent much of it in prison for offences related to his heroin addiction and made few recordings. But in the following decade, it was a different story. By the time that Dexter Gordon came to record the music for what became Clubhouse, he had already done eight album sessions for Alfred Lion’s New York-based indie label. Significantly, the saxophonist was no longer living in America, having left for a tour of Europe in 1962 which eventually saw him settling in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he made a new life for himself. Clubhouse was recorded during a brief return visit to America in the late spring of 1965, which resulted in three consecutive days of recording for Blue Note in May of that year at Rudy Van Gelder’s New Jersey studio.

Clubhouse album for sale Like that other chairman, Gordon was a master of the ballad who could briskly swagger or smoothly croon. With him in the company of the elegant and earthy piano of Barry Harris and the brash, adroit trumpeting of Freddie Hubbard, how can one go wrong with Clubhouse? Stellar.

Dexter Gordon's Clubhouse was recorded at a session in 1965, sat on Blue Note's shelves for 14 years, finally seeing the light of day in 1979. This is somewhat of a mystery to me, despite the liner notes stating that Alfred Lion was disappointed with the session. The music contained within is as soild as any Blue Note session I've heard. The album features 3 Gordon originals, the aptly titled "Hanky Panky", the smooth "Clubhouse", and the lively closing number, "Jodi". The group also plays Ben Tucker's sly "Devilette" with Tucker replacing Cranshaw on bass for this one number. I'm a Fool to Want You" finds Dex channeling his inner Sinatra, his sax full and round on this ballad.

Reviews about Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse (1):
Mash
This is essentially outtakes from the "Gettin' Around" sessions recorded with Freddie Hubbard, it's all ok, but nothing spectacular, "I'm a Fool To Want You" is the highlight
