Wilhelm Richard Wagner (/ˈvɑːɡnər/, German: (listen); 22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works.

Die Csardasfurstin (The Gypsy Princess): Act I: Lied: O, jag' dem Gluck nicht nach (Sylva, Edwin, Boni, Feri) by Marian Vach. As anyone who has listened to Bonynge recordings in the past knows, he has a way of bringing out small highlights in musical scores while also looking at the whole of the performance. The many recordings he made with his wife Dame Joan Sutherland attest to this well. He brings these same qualities to this recording.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Vorspiel.
The German Romantics had been some of the first to set out on this path: Wackenroder and Tieck had discovered Nuremberg as a locus of longing, portraying this medieval city as an idyll, a city that had grown rich on trade, typified by its free citizenry with their appreciation of art, a place that was home to famous artists such as Hans Sachs. Udo Bermbach Translated by Sophie Kidd.
For the opera by Richard Wagner, see Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Hans Sachs, leader of a famous 16th-century Meistersinger school in Nuremberg. A Meistersinger (German for "master singer") was a member of a German guild for lyric poetry, composition and unaccompanied art song of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The Meistersingers were drawn from middle class males for the most part. Plate, in "Die Kunstausdrücke der Meistersinger", gives a long list of the various features of rhythm and rhyme in this complicated poetry, in all of which can be observed a singular likeness to the technicalities invented by the lesser, and even by the better, poets two centuries earlier in Southern France.
