A twelve-minute concerto in miniature, this work, subtitled Suite in the old style, is cast in three short movements. A blistering perpetuum mobile acts as introduction, yielding to a tender slow movement, which in turn gives way to a finale marked Tempo giusto which conjures up a lively Nordic atmosphere. Dated 1889 and originally published with piano accompaniment before being orchestrated, the Suite was the first of the many works for the violin (concertos, sonatas, romances and so on) that form part of Sinding’s overall production. Personnel: Itzhak Perlman, violin Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra André Previn, conductor.

Andante Karl Goldmark; Itzhak Perlman; Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; André Previn. 3. III. Moderato - Allegretto Karl Goldmark; Itzhak Perlman; Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; André Previn. Karl Goldmark’s Violin Concerto, carrying echoes of Brahms and Mendelssohn, remains his best-loved work. Goldmark was born in Hungary, but it is a Spaniard, Pablo de Sarasate, who evokes the plaintive and fiery gypsy spirit of Central Europe in Zigeunerweisen. Itzhak Perlman’s discography is dizzying in its exceptional quality and in the sheer variety of riches it has to offer.
